Rabindra Sangeet as Christian Song

Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature, had deep respect for Jesus and had written poems inspired by Jesus.

Though not of Christian origin, this Rabindra Sangeet (রবীন্দ্র সঙ্গীত) has been incorporated into Bengali Christian worship. This Rabindra Sangeet is listed as hymn 203 in the Bengali Christian hymnal book titled, “Khrishta Sangeet” (2nd edition published in 1929).

The moon full of the heart’s joy,
the boundless ocean of love You are.

যাচে তৃষিত অমিয়বিন্দু
করুণালয় ভক্তবন্ধু

( Jace trishitô ômiyôbindu,
kôrunalôyô, bhôktôbôndhu. )
The thirsty beg for the drop of nectar,
the abode of mercy, the devoted friend.

প্রেমনেত্রে চাহ’ সেবকে
বিকশিতদল চিত্তকমল

Look at the servant with loving eyes,
O the bloomed lotus of the mind,
the God within the heart.

The heavens full of holy light,
the whole world I see is delightful,

সুধাগন্ধমুদিত পবন
ধ্বনিতগীত হৃদয়ভবন

( shudha-gôndhô-muditô pôbônô,
dhônitô-gitô hridôyôbhôbônô. )
the breeze stamped with the nectar’s aroma,
the heart’s mansion with the songs playing.

এস’ এস’ শূন্য জীবনে
মিটাও আশ সব তিয়াষ
অমৃতপ্লাবনে

( Eshô’, eshô’ shunnô jibône,
mitao ashô shôbô tiyashô
ômritô-plabône. )
Come, come to my empty life,
satisfy all the hopes and thirsts
with a deluge of nectar.

শুষ্ক চিত্তে বরিষ স্নেহ

Give knowledge, give love,
rain affection on the parched heart.
